In Miss Eagle's household, we are great fans of the British comedy, Gavin & Stacey written by Ruth Jones and James Corden. A significant character in the story of Gavin & Stacey is Stacey's hometown of Barry in Wales.. In the G & S context, Barry is all that is bland, boring, and working class.
But Australia has to know that the birthplace of their Prime Minister in waiting is Barry, Wales. Will Julia becoming Prime Minister lift the profile of Barry, Miss Eagle wants to know? Certainly, it will necessitate an editing and updating of the Wikipedia entry.
But I really would love to know, should Julia become PM, what Nessa and Smithy have to say.

ReplyDeleteI will go on record as saying I have never warmed to Julia. Her smile looks totally fake - to my eyes.

However, we have often talked about Rudd "micro-managing Australia" and that is getting us no-where.

Water politics is just one example. The MDB is drowning in paperwork, not water, which is still trapped in Queensland. Penny Wong, whom I personally know and like (as you know), is unable to make a single decision. Just one example. Garrett makes big noises about tiny decisions he makes, but cannot make any decision affecting coal mining, pollution or anything that will make a difference. Albanese is doubling the train lines up the Hunter, to take Caroona's coal. Fergusson is stuffing up the Kimberley Coastline as fast as he can. Greenhouse gasses? What's that? No wonder the ETS disappeared as quickly as it did. With Bill Shorten backing Julia, will any of these things change for the better? I doubt it.

Chris Uhlmann's commentary on Lateline last night is amazingly direct. He quoted "someone" as saying: "This crypto fascist never bothered to build a base in the Party and now that his only faction, Newspoll, has gone, so has he."

Well, it's done and dusted. Australia has it's first female Prime Minister. As I didn't get the warning of the rumblings yesterday, was taking care of a sick household member thus was in media blackout, it was a bit of a shock to hear it announced over the radio today. I guess there was a part of me that never expected to hear the words female and Prime Minister in the same breath this soon.

Belinda, I have a feeling of suppressed excitement - not only re Julia, but an old colleague Wayne Swan is Deputy PM. And they will be sworn in by another old friend, Quentin Bryce. I would like to be at Yarralumla when this happens - but I won't be on the list, sadly.

Somewhere along the line I will have to write to Wayne. So much poor and bad policy piled up so the fact that it came to this is hardly a surprise - it is how the world turns.
So I would like to point out to Wayne that The Intervention was bad policy under Howard, should never have continued, and has brought huge amounts of wasted expenditure (by whitefellas) and little benefit (to blackfellas). I would also say that it is obscene that huge sums of taxpayers money are going to wealthy educational establishments while public schools - particularly in isolated communities black and white - suffer. I also hate the way that Rudd would announce something and then say it wasn't going to implemented for three years. Crazy stuff!
But one has to bear in mind the old adage that sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Indeed, this was the question on most of the nation's lips this week. Stacey would probably say, "There's lush" on hearing the news of a Barry girl's political ascension, and Bryn would no doubt have some impassioned speech demonstrating his shock and awe at the news.
