THE COALITION OF CONCERNED MURRAY COMMUNITIES (CCR)
Formed on Grieger’s sandbar on 19 August 2009 and attended by hundreds of River Murray community members, the Coalition is reaching out to the communities of the Riverland to join them campaigning for treatment of the River Murray as one living system. The CCR intend to work their way along the River ultimately taking their message to Canberra at a strategic time.The failings of the ‘historic’ River Murray handover deal have now been demonstrated, and the deal needs to be scrapped and State and Federal Governments forced back to the drawing board to fix the system once and for all.

HURRY Save the Murray
I'm about to paddle the Murray and am making a documentary to widen awareness about the river's situation. Can I be involved?

Dave: A couple of things. I think you should be in touch with Steve Posselt. He is Australia's intrepid paddler who has done the Murray, the Darling, the Goulburn and the Yarra. You will find quite a lot of references to him on this blog. He is a great friend of Miss Eagle. You can find out all about Steve, his paddles, and his book, Cry Me A River at www.kayak4earth.com
ReplyDeleteSteve, Miss E, and quite a few others (including many of our South Australian friends) are members of the Australian Water Network. The Patron of the Network is the international water activist, Maude Barlow. We have only been going officially since April. Currently, we don't have a website but operate out of a Google Groups site at http://groups.google.com/group/australian-water-network?pli=1/
You are welcome to join.
We have members in Qld, NSW, Vic and SA and these Water Warriors operate in a wide range of localised water campaigns which involve anti-desal and anti-pipeline stuff in Victoria; anti-dam stuff in Qld; anti- mining and gas drilling in NSW and generally trying to save the Murry in SA - just to name a few. We are also busily involved in research and information sharing.
You will note when you go to Steve's site that he had support from four organisations in his most recent efforts. Not monetary support. Steve funded himself. However, organisations - particularly Plug the Pipe - helped with organising his trip through northern and central Victoria. FoE and the Victorian Women's Trust organised things, particularly media, at the Melbourne end. All this was possible because Steve came to Melbourne and met directly with people. As well, these were people whose message on water could be carried directly and simply by Steve which was exactly what happened.
